I think we can all agree that the elderly can be some of the grumpiest, stubborn people on the planet, but they can also be the kindest. In my opinion it all comes down to how you approach them. After all, what is there for an elderly person to be happy about. They’re a fraction of who they were in years past, their memory is fading, they can’t move around very well, etc. However, one thing seems to stay consistent even through out the worst cases of aging – music.
Yes, that’s right, music is something that never leaves us and has quickly become one of the best ways to treat the disgruntled elderly. When there isn’t much to live for, there is music. Music brings back happy memories, thoughts of a good life, and thus lightens the current mood. The documentary, “Alive Inside,” goes into great detail about this. The documentary, directed by Michael Rossato-Bennett, is about Dan Cohen, a middle-aged man who has been bringing the wonders of music to nursing homes. The documentary briefly mentions and references at how the elderly suffer from great deficiencies. This is why music can be the savior.
Bringing music to a nursing home gives the elderly a chance to re-live some of their greatest memories. Songs can act as bookmarks in our lives and when we listen to that song it’s like we can picture ourselves back in that time in history. Whether it’s Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, or Johnny Cash, the music the elderly listened to growing up can easily be the best medicine they have ever received. After all, sparking happiness in a true journeyman of life is a fairly contagious form of happiness shared by many.
If this interests you, then you might want to consider finding a career in the line of music. The opportunities are endless and even better yet, you don’t need to know how to play music in order to know music. Many of the top music producers don’t know how to play instrument, but knowing music and knowing what is liked is a true art in and of itself. However, education is everything. This is why I recommend attending one of the top music production schools if you feel like music is right for you.
